Netflix announced Friday that its highly anticipated sequel series *A Different World,* that boasts the same name as the original, will premiere on Sept. 24 — exactly 39 years after the original NBC comedy made its debut.

The series will serve as a continuation to the iconic '90s sitcom that began as a *Cosby Show* spinoff series in 1987, set at the same fictional HBCU and center on Tony winner Maleah Joi Moon (*Hell's Kitchen*) as Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Hillman College's finest, Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert (played by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy on the original series).

The simple teaser features Moon sitting at a classic school desk and wearing a red-and-white Hillman varsity jacket draped over a white shirt as she hums the beginning notes of the original series' theme song. In another nod to the beloved series, Moon sports a pair of flip-up glasses, just like the pair her onscreen dad made famous in the OG series.

The official synopsis of the series shares that Deborah is Whitley and Dwayne's lovingly sheltered youngest daughter, a free spirit with a flair for the spotlight with a big heart who's still figuring out her own path at Hillman. She heads to Hillman College with a new generation of students stepping onto campus "that reflects the breadth of Black life on campus."

That includes Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first‑gen criminal justice major; Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a five‑star athlete choosing legacy; Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a sharp psych major better at fixing everyone else's problems than facing his own; Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a church‑raised small‑town girl defining her own values; and Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian‑Nigerian fashion entrepreneur finding the courage to follow his vision.

In addition to the new class, legacy favorites also return, including Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne themselves, as well as Freddie Brooks (Cree Summer), Ron Johnson (Darryl M. Bell), and Lena James (Jada Pinkett Smith)

Also co-starring are Vincent Jamal Hooper as Ellington, Elijah J. Roberts as Jalen, Renee Harrison as Candace, Famecia Ward as Nellie Gaines, and Dasan Frazier as Xavier.

"Set against the rituals, humor, and nuances of an HBCU, *A Different World* is a hopeful dramedy, full of heart and unapologetically centered on the richness and complexity of the Black experience," the synopsis promises.
