The New York Jets had options at tight end this offseason. They could have pursued an established veteran.
Instead, they doubled down on youth.
Rather than searching for a quick fix or a band-aid to patch things, the Jets appear committed to developing a young tight end room. The group has first-round pick Kenyon Sadiq, a breakout candidate in second-year pro Mason Taylor and fourth-year veteran Jeremy Ruckert.
It's a gamble, but it could pay dividends well beyond the 2026 season.
The Jets didn't stumble into this approach. Selecting Sadiq in the first round made it clear the organization believes he can become a cornerstone of the offense. His athleticism, versatility and ability to threaten defenses both as a receiver and blocker give him the kind of upside teams covet at the position.
He's joined by Taylor, who flashed encouraging signs as a rookie. Ruckert, meanwhile, provides familiarity with the system and enters another season looking to capitalize on the potential that made him a third-round draft pick.
Together, they give New York one of the NFL's youngest tight end groups. That youth naturally comes with questions, but it also comes with considerable upside.
Frank Reich has the pieces to create mismatches
A talented tight end room can change the complexion of an offense. It allows coordinators to disguise intentions before the snap, remain in multiple personnel packages without substituting and create favorable matchups against linebackers and safeties.

It also gives quarterbacks reliable targets over the middle of the field while helping establish a balanced rushing attack. Those qualities should fit well within offensive coordinator Frank Reich's philosophy.
Rather than relying exclusively on wide receivers to generate explosive plays, Reich has the flexibility to incorporate multiple tight end sets, move players around the formation and force defenses to account for versatile playmakers at every level.
If Sadiq develops as expected and Taylor continues his progression, the Jets could have a position group capable of influencing both the passing and running games.
Patience could produce long-term stability
Developing young tight ends requires patience. The position demands proficiency as both a blocker and receiver, making the transition to the NFL more challenging than many fans realize.
Production doesn't always come immediately, even for highly regarded prospects.
If that development unfolds as hoped, New York won't simply have answers at tight end. It could have one of the NFL'a deeper and more versatile groups at the position. The Jets still have questions to answer before the regular season begins, but tight end may no longer be one of them.
