Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman are still close 9 years after their separation.
DeVito says the former couple still see each other all the time.
Recounting the origins of their relationship, he shared, “We had a lot in common, and we fell in love.”
Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman are still a team, despite ending their romance in 2017.
In a July interview with AARP The Magazine, DeVito made it clear that the veteran actors — who were married for over three decades — are still deeply entangled in each other’s lives.
“We’re always over at her house. We see the grandchildren together, that kind of stuff,” he told the outlet of Perlman, with whom he shares three adult children. “So that’s a good relationship.”
Perlman and DeVito tied the knot back in 1982 and went on to welcome kids Lucy, 43, Grace, 41, and Jacob, 38. They initially separated in 2012, but reconciled the following year. They separated again in 2017, and have not been romantically involved since. Still, DeVito told the outlet that they plan to remain married.

Reflecting on the origins of their romance, which began in the ‘70s when Perlman saw DeVito in an off-Broadway show and later went out for a meal with a mutual friend, the actor said that their connection was instant.
“We hit it off,” he recalled. “We liked off-Broadway stuff. We went to movies all the time. We made little movies together — short films. We had a lot in common, and we fell in love. A nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn and an Italian from New Jersey: I cooked and she ate.”
In the years since their split, Perlman and DeVito have emphasized the strength of their bond even amid the end of their romantic relationship.
In June, DeVito told Fox News that though they no longer share a home, Perlman still “lives close by.” He added, “We are really good, best of friends, and we always were from the very, very, very beginning.”

Perlman made similar comments during a 2023 appearance on Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Wiser Than Me podcast, sharing that they have made a point to put family above all else.
“We are still very good friends and we see each other a lot,” she said. “And our family is still the most important thing to both of us, I believe.”

At the same time, Perlman acknowledged the pain of their 2017 split.
“I’m not gonna, like, sugarcoat it; it was very difficult at first,” she told Louis-Dreyfus, noting that there were “a lot of reasons” for the breakup that she wouldn’t get into. “It took time for us to come to this, somehow, pretty decent understanding and relationship with each other.”

She also remarked that having the house to herself posed a significant challenge, sharing, “I don’t like living alone.”
But Perlman was quick to shut Louis-Dreyfus down when she offered to set her up, joking, “No. Unless it’s someone really wonderful, rich and famous, gorgeous and a lot younger than me.”
