Police described a "very concerning" scene at the home of Nancy Guthrie, who went missing in Arizona over the weekend.

Savannah Guthrie was noticeably absent from the Feb. 2 broadcast of *Today* amid the ongoing search for her missing mother.

The situation was addressed at the top of the Monday episode, which saw Sheinelle Jones fill in for Guthrie to host the show alongside Craig Melvin.

"We want to get right to what is a deeply personal story for us," Melvin shared. "Nancy Guthrie, Savannah’s beloved mother, has been reported missing in Arizona."

Jones added that Nancy was last seen on Saturday night before being reported missing on Sunday. Melvin then shared a statement issued by Guthrie on behalf of her family.

"I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom," read Guthrie's statement. "We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520) 351-4900."

In a Sunday evening press conference, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated that 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the night of Jan. 31 outside her home in Tucson. She was reported missing at noon on Feb. 1; while it's unclear what clothing she was wearing, she is described as 5'5" tall and 150 lbs, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Nanos noted the scene at Nancy’s house was "very concerning" and of "grave concern," which caused local law enforcement to act urgently. He added that Nancy has "no cognitive issues at all. She’s very alert, she’s of good, sound mind."

On her missing persons poster, Nancy is listed as a "vulnerable adult," and police are asking for the public's help locating her. In an attempt to locate Nancy, Nanos said authorities are employing airplanes, drones, helicopters, and search-and-rescue dogs on loan from Border Patrol. Hospitals in the area have been contacted as well, but none have reported seeing her.

Nanos additionally confirmed that the possibility of foul play has not been ruled out, with homicide detectives reportedly also involved in the investigation despite a body not having been found.

“I hope we find her safe and sound, but we can’t ignore what’s in front of us," Nanos said on Sunday.

He added, "This is very concerning to us. We don't typically get the sheriffs out at a scene like this."

Tom Winter, who covers crime and security for NBC, joined Melvin and Jones to break down the significance of Nanos’s statement, particularly pertaining to the scene at Nancy's home.

"What they found there led them to this point where they thought this was something that required their urgent attention," Winter said. "And at this point they don't think that Savannah's mom had any sort of mental issues that would have led to her leaving her home."

Nancy, who has been featured on *Today* several times throughout Savannah's 15 year tenure, last appeared in a November 2025 episode via a segment in Guthrie's hometown of Tuscon, Ariz.
