Director David Lowery says he and his team used Taylor Swift’s “Reputation” concert film as a key guide while making “Mother Mary,” the upcoming pop star drama starring Anne Hathaway. The goal was reportedly to create concert scenes that feel real and look huge — all while fitting a tight film budget.
To help the movie’s music feel credible, the production featured major names, including songs written by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and fka twigs. But Lowery says Swift’s work inspired the look and planning of the concert.

Speaking to Empire, David Lowery called Taylor Swift’s “Reputation” concert film “one of the best concert films ever,” revealing that it inspired Anne Hathaway’s latest feature film “Mother Mary.”
Lowery called the concert “truly phenomenal.” He said that the team kept returning to it during prep, admitting, “And for our concert sequences we looked at that repeatedly.” Moreover, Lowery gushed, “You would not believe the amount of time we were talking about Taylor.”

The director said that the film helped them practically plan costs, explaining, “We took three songs from Reputation and broke it down, shot by shot,” and the team asked, “‘Okay, if we were doing these, how much would these shots cost to do in visual effects?'” He added, “We were literally using Reputation as a guide.”
Additionally, Swift’s influence seeped into the team after filming, with Lowery telling Empire that Hathaway gave him “a Taylor Swift style beaded bracelet with ‘Anti-Hero’ on it,” and he said they also went to see the “Eras Tour” in Europe. Lowery concluded, “Imagine Taylor Swift in ten or 15 years – that’s sort of who this character could be.”
David Lowery is famous for switching between very different projects, so he turned to a modern pop story with “Mother Mary,” which follows Hathaway as a famous singer who reconnects with a dressmaker played by Michaela Coel. “Mother Mary” opens in UK cinemas on April 24.
